Calling > Calling phones and mobiles
  • Skype Software is not a replacement for your ordinary mobile or fixed line telephone. In particular, apart from in very limited circumstances, the Software does not allow you to make emergency calls to emergency services. You must make alternative communication arrangements to ensure you can make emergency calls if necessary.

  • With Skype you can make calls to all standard fixed and mobile numbers in the world, as well as some premium rate numbers. However, some premium rate (e.g. 1-900 numbers) or geographic/country specific numbers are not supported by Skype.

Skype supports calls to some satellite phones, including Inmarsat devices. Check our price list for call rates – just type Inmarsat into the country field.

  • To dial an extension number during a call, or to enter a number or character such as # (hash) on an automated phone system:

    1. In the toolbar that is displayed during the call, click the dial pad icon. You may have to move your mouse to make the call bar appear.

    2. Use the dial pad to enter numbers or characters.

  • To make a call to a mobile or landline, first you need to have some Skype Credit or a subscription. You can then call a number on your contact's profile, or use the dial pad to enter a phone number.

If you are still unable to make a call, please refer to the following table for help with resolving the issue.

    Problem Resolution
Do you have enough Skype Credit? You need to have enough Skype Credit to make a call to your destination lasting at least one minute. We recommend you check your Skype Credit balance before each call, either in Skype, or by signing in to your account. You can also check out our rates page to see how much your call will cost per minute. If you have insufficient Skype Credit, you’ll need to buy some before making the call.
Does your subscription cover the call you want to make? If you have a subscription, but your call won’t connect, it’s likely that you are trying to call a number or destination not covered by your subscription.
Have you dialed a valid number? Check that you have dialed the number correctly. Remember to select the country from the drop-down, or enter a “+” and then the country code plus the number you want to call.
Does Skype support the number you dialed? Unfortunately Skype does not support calls to all number ranges in every country. There are certain premium-priced or geographic/country specific numbers which are forbidden and cannot be reached using Skype.
Is it just one specific number you can’t call? Due to fluctuations in the public switched telephone network (PTSN) we cannot always guarantee the quality or reliability of calls made from Skype. Such issues are usually temporary, so if you have problems calling a specific number, we suggest trying again later. If the problem persists, please report this, stating the destination and your Skype Name, to Skype Customer Service.
Is your Internet connection strong enough? Make sure you have a strong Internet connection when you attempt to place the call. If you're on Wi-Fi, move to an area where the signal is stronger or connect to another network.

Calling a number using the dial pad

You can easily dial a phone number using the dial pad in Skype, just like on any phone:

    1. Sign into Skype

    2. Click the Call phones icon.

    The dial pad is displayed.

    3. If you're calling abroad, enter the country code (for example, +1 for the United States), or click the country drop-down above the dial pad and select a country from the list.

    4. Enter the phone number (or click the numbers on the dial pad) and click the blue Call button

    5. If you call this number regularly, click the Add to Contacts button under the dial pad. In the box that pops up, enter a name for the number and click Save.

Next time you want to call this number, just look it up in your contact list so you don't have to type it in again.

  • With Skype, it’s easy to call people in other countries. You can make a call:

    • From Skype to someone else on Skype

    • From Skype to someone on their mobile or landline

    • From any phone with Skype to Go

Calling from Skype to someone else on Skype

Skype-to-Skype calls are free. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, or where the person you’re calling is. It doesn’t even matter if you’re using Skype on a computer, a mobile* or your TV. As long as you’re both using Skype, the call is completely free.

You can make Skype-to-Skype calls using video or just voice – it’s up to you. Make a voice call with up to 25 people at once and that’s free too (as long as everyone’s on Skype). If you want to have a video call with more than two people, that's free too.

    * WiFi connection or mobile data plan required.

    Calling someone’s mobile or landline

You can call someone on their mobile or landline from Skype. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world: if you’re signed in to Skype, you can call anyone, anywhere at low per minute rates. The price you pay depends on the country you’re calling to, not the country you’re calling from.

Pay as you go using Skype Credit – check out our rates. Or buy a monthly subscription to a particular country or region.

Calling someone from any phone with Skype to Go

If you’re away from your computer, you can make low-cost international calls to friends and family from your mobile or any landline. You just need to add your friends as Skype To Go™ contacts, and we’ll give you a special Skype To Go number for each of them. Then simply dial these numbers to call your friends from any phone.

It doesn’t cost anything to set up Skype To Go numbers. You just need to have some Skype Credit or a subscription.
